• Entering only final grades without semester context: GPA should be calculated across all courses in the same semester or term. If you mix courses from different semesters, the result is a cumulative figure that may not match your transcript.
• Using the wrong scale: Most US universities use a 4.0 scale. Some institutions use 5.0 or 10.0 scales. This calculator uses 4.0. If your institution uses a different scale, the letter-to-point mapping may not match.
• Ignoring credit hours in a weighted GPA: A simple GPA averages grades equally. A weighted GPA weights each grade by credit hours. If a 4-credit course and a 1-credit course both get A grades but one gets B, the 4-credit course dominates. Use the grade calculator for weighted results.
• Treating an A and A+ as the same: On a 4.0 scale, A+ is sometimes 4.0 (same as A) and sometimes 4.3. It varies by institution. Check your school's specific grading policy before using the result to calculate academic standing.

• Use it to plan what GPA is still achievable: If you have four courses completed and two remaining, enter hypothetical grades for the remaining courses. This shows what final GPA is possible given different performance scenarios.
• Track semester GPA separately from cumulative: Your semester GPA matters for academic standing requirements. Your cumulative GPA matters for graduation. Calculate both and monitor how the current semester is moving the cumulative figure.
• Check pass/fail course treatment: Courses graded pass/fail typically do not count toward GPA. Exclude them from the calculator. If you accidentally include a P or F grade, the point value will be zero and distort the average.
• Convert to letter grades for scholarship requirements: Scholarship minimum GPA requirements are usually stated as a letter grade (e.g., "B or better = 3.0"). If your GPA is 2.97, know that rounding conventions vary. Do not assume 2.97 rounds to 3.0 for eligibility purposes.
