Enter the area to convert
Area in target unit = (value × fromFactor) / toFactorEvery area unit has a factor relative to one square meter. The converter multiplies the input by its from-factor to get square meters, then divides by the to-factor of the target unit. All conversions are exact within rounding.
Enter an area value, pick the source unit, and see all common area-unit equivalents.
Enter an area in any common unit (square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles) to see all other equivalents at once. Useful for real estate listings, farm and land sales, construction site planning, and reading international property documents.
Area conversion shows up in property listings, farm sales, construction estimates, and everyday math. A US homeowner reading a hectare-based land listing or a European buyer looking at an acre figure both need a quick conversion. This tool handles all common metric and imperial area units in one place.
You came here because
Common situations
- Real estate listings: Compare property sizes between countries using different units.
- Farming and agriculture: Convert farmland between acres, hectares, and square meters for sales or planning.
- Construction planning: Estimate site area in the unit system your contractor uses.
- Carpet and flooring quotes: Convert room size to the unit your supplier prices in.
Under the hood
How the calculation works
- 1Enter the area value you want to convert.
- 2Pick the source unit from the dropdown.
- 3Pick the target unit.
- 4The calculator converts to square meters first, then to the target unit.
- 5Other common unit equivalents are listed below the primary result.

A real example
Example: Convert 2 acres to hectares
- 12 acres × 4046.86 m²/acre = 8093.72 m²
- 28093.72 m² ÷ 10000 = 0.8094 hectares
Watch out for
What can go wrong
- Confusing acres with hectares: One hectare is about 2.47 acres. They are close enough that people mix them up in casual conversation but they are not the same. A 10-hectare farm is roughly 24.7 acres, not 10.
- Forgetting square units are different from linear units: A 10-foot square room is 100 square feet, not 10. Always square the linear dimensions before reporting an area.
- Using statute miles for land at sea: A square nautical mile (3.43 km²) is larger than a square statute mile (2.59 km²). Always check which mile your source uses.
- Mixing units mid-calculation: Computing area by multiplying a length in meters by a width in feet gives a meaningless number. Convert all inputs to the same unit system first.

Pro tips
- Memorize one hectare = 2.47 acres: This single number lets you convert most land-area figures in your head. Multiply hectares by 2.5 for a quick approximation.
- Use hectares for farms, square feet for houses: Real-estate convention varies by use. Residential listings in the US use square feet; agricultural and large-parcel listings use acres or hectares.
- Always specify the unit: When sending an area figure to a contractor or agent, always state the unit. "300" can mean 300 m² or 300 ft² and the difference is roughly 10x.
- Use the converter for room totals: Add up room areas in your usual unit, then convert the total once. This avoids accumulating rounding errors from converting each room individually.
