Volume Converter

Volume measurement spans cooking, chemistry, plumbing, and fuel. The metric system uses milliliters, liters, and cubic meters. US customary measures use teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Engineering uses cubic inches and cubic feet. Converting between these systems requires exact factors that are easy to misremember. A US cup is 236.588 mL, not 250 mL. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL, which differs from the UK fluid ounce (28.4131 mL). This converter uses US customary measures. All 12 unit equivalents are shown at once, making it useful as a reference card for cooking or lab work.

• Treating a US cup as 250 mL: A US cup is 236.588 mL, not 250 mL. Using 250 mL introduces a 5.7% error per cup, which compounds in recipes with multiple cup measures.
• Using UK fluid ounces in US recipes: A UK fl oz (28.41 mL) is about 4% smaller than a US fl oz (29.57 mL). For most cooking, the difference is negligible. For pharmaceutical and scientific use, the distinction matters.
• Confusing volume and weight for liquids: Volume in mL and weight in grams are only equal for water. One mL of water = 1 gram. One mL of honey ≈ 1.4 grams. For dense liquids, use a density conversion, not a simple unit swap.
• Forgetting to scale all ingredients: When scaling recipes, all volume ingredients (and masses) must be scaled by the same factor. Using this converter for just one ingredient while leaving others unchanged produces an unbalanced recipe.

• 1 mL = 1 cm³: use freely in lab contexts: Milliliters and cubic centimeters are exactly the same unit. If a protocol calls for cm³ and you have mL, no conversion is needed.
• Teaspoon to tablespoon: 3 tsp = 1 tbsp: Three teaspoons make one tablespoon. This is exact in US measurements and is worth memorizing for kitchen work.
• Convert large volumes with liters first: For very large volumes (tanks, pools), convert to liters first for readability, then to cubic meters for SI work. A 10,000-liter pool is 10 m³.
