What can go wrong
- Counting all fluids as water: Coffee, tea, and juice contribute to hydration but are not identical to water. High-caffeine drinks have mild diuretic effects. Use the water target as a floor, with other fluids on top.
- Not adjusting for hot weather: The formula uses a baseline multiplier for activity level but does not account for climate. In hot and humid conditions, you need significantly more than the calculated baseline.
- Drinking all at once instead of across the day: The kidneys can process about 0.8-1 liter per hour. Drinking your entire daily target in a few sessions is not equivalent to steady hydration throughout the day.
- Ignoring water from food: Fruits and vegetables are 80-95% water by weight. If you eat a plant-heavy diet, your actual water needs from beverages are somewhat lower than the calculation suggests.
