Pace and speed are two ways of measuring the same thing. Speed tells you how far you go per hour. Pace tells you how long each kilometer (or mile) takes. Runners tend to think in pace because it maps directly to training zones and race strategy: your target race pace, your easy run pace, and your interval pace are all expressed in minutes per unit. Knowing your pace unlocks a lot of useful planning. If you run 5 km in 28 minutes, your pace is 5:36 per km. Multiply that pace by 42.195 km and you get a marathon estimate of around 3 hours 57 minutes. That is a rough projection assuming constant effort, but it gives you a starting point for goal-setting and race planning. This calculator works in both kilometers and miles.   • Entering distance in one unit but expecting the other: If you run 5 miles but enter 5 in km mode, the pace will be off by a factor of 1.6. Double-check the unit selector before reading the result.
  • Assuming race estimates are exact: The projected finish times assume you hold exactly the same pace for the full race distance. In practice, fatigue, terrain, and weather affect longer distances. Use the projection as a planning benchmark, not a guaranteed result.
  • Confusing pace with speed: A lower pace number is faster (5:00/km is faster than 6:00/km). A higher speed number is faster (12 km/h is faster than 10 km/h). They move in opposite directions, which causes confusion when comparing runs.
  • Using a GPS-rounded distance: GPS watches can under- or over-measure distance by 1-3% depending on signal quality. A measured track (400 m) or a certified road course gives a more accurate distance for calculating pace.
