Countdown Calculator

When is the event?

Compute countdown from this date

Formula
remaining = targetDate - referenceDate

The countdown is the difference between two timestamps in milliseconds, then broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Years and months are approximate (using 365.25 and 30.44 day averages). Days, hours, and seconds are exact.

TL;DR

Enter a target date. See days, hours, minutes, and weeks remaining until it arrives.

Enter a future date and time to see exactly how long until it arrives. Output includes days, hours, minutes, weeks, and months. Useful for vacation countdowns, project deadlines, wedding planning, exam preparation, and product launch tracking.

Vacation in 47 days. Wedding in 6 months. Tax deadline in 2 weeks. We all count down to things, and the math is simple but tedious. This calculator does it instantly and shows the answer in the units you actually use: days for short-term, weeks for medium, months for long-term planning.

You came here because

Common situations

  • Vacation tracking: Count down to a trip departure date with day-by-day precision.
  • Wedding planning: Track time remaining for venue bookings, dress fittings, and invitations.
  • Project deadlines: Monitor how many working days remain before a project is due.
  • Exam preparation: Plan study time backward from a test date.
  • Birthday and anniversary reminders: See how far away the next celebration is.

Under the hood

How the calculation works

  1. 1Pick the target date and time using the date picker.
  2. 2Pick the reference date (today, by default).
  3. 3The calculator subtracts the two timestamps.
  4. 4The result is broken into days, hours, and minutes.
  5. 5Weeks and months are also shown as approximations.

A real example

Example: Days until December 31, 2026

  1. 1Reference date: May 24, 2026
  2. 2Target date: December 31, 2026
  3. 3Difference: 221 days, or 5,304 hours
Result: 221 days, 31 weeks, or about 7.3 months.

Watch out for

What can go wrong

  • Forgetting time zones: A countdown to "midnight December 31" in New York is different from London. Always specify a time zone for events viewed by people in different locations.
  • Counting partial days as whole days: If your event is 12 hours away, the countdown is 0 days and 12 hours, not 1 day. Round down on days, then carry the remainder into hours.
  • Using calendar months for due dates: A "due in 3 months" task can mean exactly 90 days or the same date 3 calendar months out. They differ by a few days. Always confirm which.
  • Ignoring leap years for long countdowns: A one-year countdown across a leap year is 366 days, not 365. The calculator handles this automatically; do not subtract by hand.

TermDefinition
Epoch timeThe number of milliseconds since January 1, 1970 UTC. JavaScript uses this internally for date math.
Time zoneA region that shares the same standard time. Countdowns across time zones must be converted to a common reference.
Approximate vs exact unitsDays, hours, and seconds are exact. Weeks are exact for any 7-day window. Months and years vary in length and are approximate when summed.

Make it better

Pro tips

  • Count in weeks for medium-term planning: Days are best for under 30. Weeks are best for 4-26 weeks. Months are best for half-year-plus events. Pick the unit that gives a number between 1 and 99.
  • Add buffer to your planning countdown: If a project is due in 60 days, plan as if you have 50. Real life eats time.
  • Use the target time, not just the date: A flight at 06:00 and at 22:00 on the same day differ by 16 hours. Set the time in the picker for accurate countdowns.
  • Combine with the working-days calculator: For project deadlines, the working-days calculator excludes weekends. Use it alongside the countdown for accurate effort planning.
