A real example
Example: Convert $250 USD to Euros
- 1Fetch live rate: EUR = 0.92 per USD
- 2250 USD ÷ 1.00 = 250 (already in USD base)
- 3250 × 0.92 = 230 EUR
Watch out for
What can go wrong
- Confusing mid-market rate with transaction rate: The ECB rate shown here is the mid-market (interbank) rate. Banks and exchange bureaus add a spread on top. What you actually pay or receive will differ from this figure.
- Using cached rates from yesterday: If the page was open before markets closed and you did not refresh it, the rates may be stale. Reload the page before any time-sensitive conversion.
- Ignoring transfer fees: Exchange rate is only part of the cost. Wire transfer fees, card foreign-transaction fees, and service charges add to the effective rate. Factor these in for large conversions.
- Assuming weekend rates match weekday rates: The ECB publishes rates on weekdays only. On weekends and public holidays, the live fetch returns Friday's closing rate. Markets may have moved by Monday.

| Exchange rate | The price of one currency in terms of another. Rates fluctuate continuously in the foreign exchange market. |
| ECB reference rate | The daily rate published by the European Central Bank based on a concertation procedure between central banks. Used as a benchmark, not a trading rate. |
| Spot rate | The current market rate for immediate exchange, as opposed to a forward rate agreed today for a future transaction. |
| Spread | The difference between the buy and sell rates offered by a bank. Banks profit on currency exchange through this spread. The ECB rate shown here is the mid-market rate and does not include any spread. |

Pro tips
- Use the all-currency output for comparison: The calculator shows conversions to all 11 currencies at once. If you are deciding which currency to hold savings in, scan the full table rather than running separate conversions.
- Check the rate source label: The result shows whether the rate came from the live ECB feed or from fallback reference values. If you see "Reference rates (offline)", reload before relying on the number.
- Compare with your bank before transferring: Run the conversion here, then check your bank's rate. The gap is your bank's spread. For large amounts, a specialist transfer service like Wise often offers a tighter spread.
- Bookmark the page rather than copying numbers: Currency markets move between morning and afternoon. Bookmark the calculator and reload it at the time of your actual transaction rather than using a number from earlier in the day.
